Known as the Queen City on the Hudson River, Poughkeepsie is located half way
between New York City and Albany, the state capital. Though small in size, Poughkeepsie
offers a number of accommodations and services that make it an attractive destination
for travelers. Founded in 1687, Poughkeepsie is home to a number of historical
sites, including the courthouse where New York officially ratified the Constitution
in 1788. The Bardavon 1869 Opera House is another historical attraction, and
is the oldest continually running entertainment venue in New York State. Beyond
the local history, Poughkeepsie also boasts fine dining and shopping along Main
Street in the heart of the city. In addition, Poughkeepsie is home to Vassar
College, famous for its liberal arts instruction as well as the 200 varieties
of trees on the 1,000 acre campus.
